Barcelona didn't play in the last round because of the duties in Club World Cup, but they played the game against Xerez away and secured the helm position in Primera. Villarreal easily handled Santander in front of their fans and used the three new points to move up on the standings
After losing at home to Villarreal, Atletico Madrid took only one point against Tenerife. On the other hand, Sevilla unexpectedly dropped points against Getafe at home, but in spite of that they held on to the third place on the standings.
Santander ended this year with a defeat but even so they managed to stay out of the relegation zone. Tenerife are steadily moving towards their aim - staying in the league, mostly thanks to good home games.
Zaragoza suffered a real humiliation at Santiago Bernabeu, where Real beat them 6:0. Deportivo La Coruna managed to take a point at home against dangerous Valencia in a goalless draw
Mallorca finished the year with a defeat by Malaga, thus ending the excellent run of five unbeaten games. Unlike their rivals, Bilbao ended the year with two triumphs and the last one was at home against Zaragoza. If Mallorca could play all the games at home, they would be champions Mallorca are invincible on the island, while they are not as nearly convincing away. Team’s best scorer is Aduriz with seven goals and interestingly, he scored all of these goals at home.
Two weeks ago Osasuna played in Bilbao, where already after ten minutes on the pitch it was clear that the Pamplona side will suffer the fourth defeat in the last six rounds. On the other hand Real easily reached their third straight win, this time after recording a convincing triumph over Zaragoza (6:0). The negative tradition ended Only thanks to the good performance in the first part of the season, Osasuna are not in the endangered zone, even though their play in the last few rounds undoubtedly puts them in the red zone.
Kilmarnock remained in the danger zone despite the good point they picked up from Tannadice Park and this is definitely not the best time to be facing Celtic.
These two teams met just two weeks ago when Rangers recorded a convincing win at Tannadice Park and Gers now aim to record their sixth successive league win before they face Celtic in the Old Firm derby. Dundee United started their life without Craig Levein with a goalless draw against struggling Kilamrnock and they don’t have much reason for optimism before the trip to Ibrox. Rangers gained the upper hand in the title race Rangers have hit the ground running in SPL immediately after they were eliminated from the Champions League and the impressive five-match winning run saw them go four points clear at the top
After the hard-fought victory over Hull, Manchester United should have an easier job against Wigan in an attempt to close the gap behind Chelsea. The Latics couldn’t beat Blackburn at home and they are now in a difficult position, which is likely to get even worse after the game at Old Trafford.
Portsmouth suffered a major blow to their survival hopes having lost to fellow strugglers West Ham on Boxing Day and they enter the Arsenal game very low on spirits.
