The two teams are still in the danger zone and this game is a good chance for one of them to boost their survival hopes. Wigan picked up just two points from their last two games after failing to hold on to the one-goal lead in both of those, while Bolton lost to Manchester City but then showed a lot of promise in the 1:1 draw with Tottenham in the FA Cup.
Wigan moved two points clear of the relegation zone after sharing spoils with Sunderland at Stadium of Light and the Latics are looking for an extra boost to their survival chances as they play host to Stoke. The Potters defeated Blackburn last weekend and they will now try to end the five-match scoreless run on the travels. The Latics had a good game at Stadium of Light This season was always going to be difficult for the Latics after the numerous changes in the summer and Roberto Martinez is still trying to get the best out of this team.
The Merseyside derby will open this Premiership round and what a match it should be. Liverpool have finally shown some improvement, having taken seven points from last three games, while Everton are in the form of the season, thus both sides are hoping to emerge triumphant and thus continue the good run of results
Sunderland continued their abysmal run with the goalless draw against Stoke and to say they now desperately need a win would be an understatement.
Blackburn escaped the danger zone with the win over Fulham but they couldn’t qualify for the Carling Cup final having lost 7:4 to Aston Villa on aggregate. Rovers now face a very important match against fellow strugglers Wigan, the team that boosted their survival hopes with an away win over Wolves.
Both sides had their weekend matches called off due to heavy snow, which means this will have been their first match after two weeks when the sides took part in the FA Cup. Wolves and Wigan are tied on 19 points and we, therefore, expect a very interesting encounter between relegation-threatened sides. Big chance for Wolves Recent games against Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City have shown Wolves don’t have enough quality to match the best teams in the league but they are aware the survival points are usually won in the matches against direct relegation rivals
After the hard-fought victory over Hull, Manchester United should have an easier job against Wigan in an attempt to close the gap behind Chelsea. The Latics couldn’t beat Blackburn at home and they are now in a difficult position, which is likely to get even worse after the game at Old Trafford.
Wigan couldn’t build on the memorable win over Chelsea as they lost to Hull in the very next round and the Latics now face another difficult task. City continued the good run by taking a point from Villa Park and they need a win at JJB in order to remain in the top 4
These are the two teams likely to be involved in the relegation fight this season, which makes this match very important for both sides.
